Research

I am a Postdoc in Computer Systems group at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. My current research is part of the Ibis Project. It focusses on developing a system that make it easy to create applications that run on distributed and heterogeneous set of resources, such as arbitrary combination of traditional clusters, GPU clusters, Cell clusters, Supercomputers, etc. Instead of writing such applications from scratch, we assume that they can be compiled from pre-existing kernels, each kernel designed and optimized for a specific type of hardware. It is then up to our system to ensure that the right work ends up on the right machines, minimizing transfer delay and ensuring a good load balance.

In a previous life, I worked on the Starplane Project which dealt with figuring out how grid applications can benefit from using reconfigurable photonic networks. In a reconfigurable photonic network, an application is able to set up one or more dedicated end-to-end lightpaths, potentially providing it hundreds of Gbit/s of aggregate bandwidth. Using lightpaths, applications may allocate networks much like they allocate memory.

Before Starplane, I participated in the VLE Project, where my research dealt with building a high-performance, robust, and highly portable grid programming environment called Ibis. Ibis is designed to be used in large-scale Grid environments which are heterogeneous and suffer from failures.

Before VLE, I was a postdoc on the Gridlab Project, where I worked on designing and implementing adaptive components for grid computing. Adaptive components help applications to adapt their behaviour to changes in their environment, such as changes in the available network bandwidth, network topology, cpu load, or available memory.
