Studentencolloquium 2011 Voor: eerstejaars wiskunde studenten. Aanwezigheid is verplicht. Week 40 Tijd: 15.30-16:30, dinsdag. Zaal: WN S623 Spreker: Bob Planque (http://www.few.vu.nl/~rplanque/) Titel: r- of K-selectie. Week 42 Tijd: 15.30-16:30, dinsdag. Zaal: WN S623 Spreker: Bob Rink Titel: Week 46 Tijd: 15.30-16:30, dinsdag 15-11. 5-10: Henk Knoester (Teijin Aramid) Titel: Some aspects of mathematical modelling of fibers. Samenvatting: Fibers are made of polymer molecules. In a fiber, these long-chain molecules are highly oriented. The first part of the colloquium is on modelling of polymerization: the chemical process of converting elementary chemical species (monomers) into long-chain molecules. While only briefly mentioning classical physical/chemical modelling, the focus will be on the prediction of molecular weight distribution based on statistical analysis. The Flory equations for the molar mass of the polymerization product will be derived from first principles. The second part of the colloquium is on the strength of fiber filaments and of bundles and yarns (twisted bundles) being large groups of parallel filaments. Experimentally measured filament strength varies from filament to filament and usually can be described by a probability density function (pdf). While knowing this pdf, it is explained how the strength of a bundle of filaments is predicted. After a short description of the helical filament trajectories in yarns, some ideas about yarn strength will be discussed briefly. 19-10: Aad van der Vaart (http://www.few.vu.nl/~aad/) Titel: Reconstructing a function from noisy observation of its primitive Samenvatting: The problem of mathematical statistics is to infer a parameter from data that gives a noisy representation of this parameter. In this presentation we illustrate this by a toy model: the parameter is a function and the data is a noisy representation of its primitive function. This "inverse" problem has similar mathematical characteristics as more practical problems such as reconstructing a brain image from data obtained in a PET medical scanner. We discuss a reconstruction technique based on a version of Bayes' rule from probability theory, and a theorem that one can prove about it. 16-11: Bob Planque (http://www.few.vu.nl/~rplanque/) Titel: r- of K-selectie. 30-11: Bob Rink (http://www.few.vu.nl/~brink/) Titel: biljarten. 14-12: Rob de Jeu (http://www.few.vu.nl/~jeu/)
