Objective

Within the context of the SURF MultiVla project, the subproject ICWall focuses on visualization and scalable projection technologies. More precisely, it aims at three points:

  • Development of a so called tiled display,
  • Development of a software environment for the use of the tiled display possibly together with other visualization environments,
  • Development of a number of case studies within Physics and Bio-medical sciences cursus, in order to test the both technical and didactical aspects of hardware and software developed.

The characteristics of tiled displays are:

  • Scalability
The size of the display is determined by the number of projectors used. A small setup (around 8 projectors coupled to a cluster of PC’s) can easily be used for medium-sized groups (~ 30+ persons)
  • Standard components
The setup can be realized using off-the-shelf components. This reduces the price substantially.
  • Resolution
The resolution of the screen is the sum of the resolution of the individual projectors.
  • Size
The large format allows a wide variety of different applications. An advantage is the saturation of field of view and the possibility for simultaneous projection of different types of information.
