Daan Admiraal

Daan Admiraal was born in 1949. He studied the oboe at the Amsterdam Conservatory of Music, where he graduated in 1973 with the "Zilveren Vriendenkrans". In 1976 he obtained the Prix d'Excellence. He played in the Gelders Orchestra, and temporarily in many other Dutch orchestras. In 1978, he was the soloist with the Dutch Student Orchestra (NSO), playing Mozart's oboe concerto.
Meanwhile, he completed his studies for orchestra conductor with Louis Stotijn with a concert with the Residentie Orchestra, the Hague. Then he studied with Kirill Kondrashin, and in 1980 he was one of the finalists in the conductor course of the NOS.
Since 1975, Daan Admiraal conducts the VU Orchestra. Besides a number of smaller ensembles, he leads Krashna Musika (student orchestra in Delft), and between 1984 and 1997 the NESKO (Netherlands Students' Chamber Orchestra). Since 2000, Daan Admiraal conducts the Amsterdam orchestra Philh@rmonie. He is a frequent guest conductor with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Gelders Orkest and the Limburgs Symphony Orchestra. He also conducted I Fiamminghi and the Baroque orchestra Concerto '91. He is the conductor of the Toonkunst Choir and the Toonkunst Chamber Choir in Rotterdam since 1993. Besides all this, he usually teaches at the Kurt Thomas Course for conductors in The Hague.

Since the establishment of the VU Chamber Orchestra in 1991, Daan Admiraal is its conductor.
