Leidseplein and Museum Area
A lot of hotels are situated in the Leidseplein or the Museum area. From
central station most areas in Amsterdam are directly reachable. You can
use the subway, trams
public transport .
Travelling from the airport to these areas. From the airport, take
a train to Amsterdam Central Station. The railway station is located directly
next to the airport. You will have to buy a ticket in advance at the ticket
After disboarding at Amsterdam Central Station, you can take either
tram 2 or 5 to Leidseplein and Museum areas. You can take the first or
second stop after Leidseplein, for Leidseplein and Museum areas respectively.
Usually, stops are announced by the driver and trams do not skip stops.
You can buy tickets at the railway station or magazine stores. You will
then be sold a ticket containing 15 'strips' for 12.50 guilders valid in
the subway, trams and buses. For a 1 zone trip, you have to stamp 2 strips,
for a 2 zone trip, you have to stamp 3 strips, and so on. Tickets can also
be bought in the tram, either from the driver or from the ticket printer
in the middle of the tram. For the trip to Leidseplein and Museum area,
a 1 zone ticket is needed (3 guilders, more expensive). Tram/bus tickets
are not valid in the train from the airport to Amsterdam.
To go from the Leidseplein and Museum areas to Vrije Universiteit. It
is best to use tram 5 in the direction Amstelveen (not to the Central Station
- the opposite direction). The stop is called 'VU' (short for Vrije
Universiteit) and is not always announced (or it is, but even Dutchmen are
unable to recognise it as such). It is the stop right after the railway
station Zuid/WTC (South/World Trade Center - a huge blue gleaming office
building). The trip is 2 zones (= 3 strips on the ticket) and about 25 minutes.
- To go from the Central Station or Amstel Station to the Vrije Universiteit.
Take subway nr. 51 in the direction of 'Amstelveen - Poortwachter', the trip
is 2 zones (= 3 strips on the ticket) and about 20 minutes. If you wish to
travel to the Vrije Universiteit from other railwaystations, first go to
the railwaystation 'Station Zuid - World Trade Center' (South Station - WTC)
and take either tram 5 or subway 51 for 1 stop in the direction of Amstelveen
to reach the university.
